March Sadness: This Boston College Interview is Perfect

I get it. One of the best parts about being on a team is the tight-knit, closer than kin relationships you build with your teammates. You live together, you travel together, you win together and you lose together. Apparently though, for one Boston College basketball player, out of all the possible experiences he’s had over the course of four years as a collegiate athlete, a food related experience trumps them all.

Tuesday night, the Boston College Eagles capped off an impressive 0-18 conference record in ACC play, followed by a 22 point loss to Florida State in the conference tourney. And by impressive, I mean, “I know the ACC is fairly strong, but you couldn’t even manage one win? That’s impressive.” Even more impressive may be that the Eagles lost to number 9 UNC by three points, but couldn’t stay within 25 of the 2-16 bottom feeder competitors, the Wake Forest Deacs.

After the game, wait, FSU practice session, the media took to a press conference where BC senior Dennis Clifford, who leads the team in rebounding (7.3 RPG), absolutely stole the show. If you stuck with the video through his 20+ second emotional moment of silence, you witnessed this:

Jimmy Kimmel's reaction to Boston College Senior, Dennis Clifford's most valuable collegiate memory.

Afterward, Clifford was asked what his best memory of playing college basketball will be. He choked up and put his head down, pausing for more than 20 seconds. When he looked back up, his face was red, his eyes were welling.

His answer: "Going out to eat."

You can’t make this stuff up. When asked about his FAVORITE MEMORY while being a Division 1 athlete in, arguably, the best overall basketball conference in the country – Clifford, with PLENTY of time to think it through, decides on “going out to eat” as the winner.

Don’t get me wrong – I love food more than most people I know and I enjoy having meals with my closest friends as well. But if I had to choose between not eating out with my friends the entire basketball season, or let’s say, PLAYING IN CAMERON INDOOR, I’ll gladly eat the crap out of some PB&J's for a few months.

This is actually depressing. When you add up all of the negatives in this situation, it just plain sucks. First, it’s Clifford’s last college basketball game ever. Second, the team he represented lost EVERY SINGLE conference game they played in… getting run out of the gym in most of them. Last, and obviously not least, the senior center couldn’t think of a single memory he enjoyed more than having dinner with his teammates.

I feel you, Cliff. I really do. Heading to the Pizza Inn buffet after a 16-10 win over our cross-town rivals in 4th grade hoops is atop the list of my favorite memories I incurred throughout my basketball career.
